Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Workshops
The Princeton-Blairstown Center’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I) programming is focused on building a transformative SEL framework. Anchored in the premise of justice-oriented community, it addresses issues of culture, identity, agency, belonging, and engagement explored as expressions of the five core SEL competencies. Using three challenge levels, the Center’s trained facilitators meet each group of participants where they are, with the goal of moving everyone upwards on the continuum of the DE&I framework.
The overarching goals of the program focus on fostering self-awareness and empathy in order to promote enhanced social awareness and civic engagement directed at building a more equitable society. To embody current best practices, the Center aims to pair a person of color with a non-person of color to facilitate this work. Participants in DE&I programming will:
Recognize how their own and others’ identities influence their interactions;
Listen to others’ views and analyze these in relation to their own reflexive listening;
Take on and try to understand multiple perspectives different from their own lived experience;
Learn to navigate uncomfortable and challenging conversations and reflect on these dialogues;
Formulate thoughtful, high-order questions that challenge their own preconceptions and original views; and
Develop and articulate remedies for pervasive structural inequalities and engage in civic action directed toward societal transformation.
These goals are achieved through integrated, hands-on DE&I activities and meaningful debriefs designed to evoke self-reflection, enhance social awareness, and promote active civic engagement among participants. Our trained staff can also provide resources such as vocabulary and topical background information to help facilitate tough conversations with each group around biases, identity, and the social constructs that inform them.
